At first glance, this seems to have been intended to be a dark piece. The combination of red and black dominating the scene are the first step in the creation of this effect. The depth of these colors strike a contrast with the pale skin of the model, she seems oppressed. Indeed everything surrounding her appears to be heavy: the thick dress and curtains in the background weigh down on her, even her own hair is drooping around her face and delicate shoulders.
But the lighting and model's expression make this photograph far more than just just a "dark piece". The model has her eyes fixed on a light shining right above her. This succeeds at being intriguing: is the light connected in any way to what's pulling her dress up? It gives an enjoyable opening to interpretation. It could be possible to think that the light is way to show that there is hope amongst this oppressive atmosphere. And more importantly, the expression of pure determination on the model's face suggests she is willing to do whatever it takes to see that hope fulfilled.
This is of course just one way of looking at this work. I like to see it as "darkness, but light", but it is more like a flip coin: one could also choose to see "light, but darkness". Quite a deep photograph, gorgeous work on contrasts, and of course, you make an excellent, expressive model :).

I see so much lazy and unenthusiastic, so-called, "art" on deviantART, that I wonder why I still come here.. and then I see a magnificent piece like this, and it reminds me of why I continue to browse deviations. It's creative, unique, and the lighting is perfect. Great job.
